Concept 2 Rowing Machine

The concept 2 rowing machine is an indoor rower that simulates the action of propelling a boat/canoe using the motion of oars in the water. Oars are the instruments you would use to propel yourself in water when you are on a boat; the rowing handles of the concept 2 act as these oars. Rowing machines typically use a rotating flywheel that is loaded using braking techniques such as pneumatics, hydraulics or magnetism, to simulate water resistance. The handles of the rowing machine are then attached to the fly wheel in a way that the action of pulling them back, using the pivot support and strength of your body and legs, simulates a real rowing experience.

Indoor rowing works on several muscle groups in your body including arms, legs, chest, back, and abs. Used properly, rowing machines can burn between 500 to 800 calories in an intensive, 1 hour workout. With a consistent regime, it will help tone and strengthen your muscles. In addition to working out your muscles rowing machines will raise your heart rate which works as a way of strengthening your heart; in so doing, they will improve your lung capacity leading to better utilization of oxygen and a lower resting heart rate.

Concept 2 rowing machines come in two variations; model D and model E. Both models use an air-resisted flywheel, a sliding seat, and come
equipped with an electronic performance monitor. The enclosed chain driven flywheel has a silencer system that dampens noise produced by the chain using a urethane washer.

The LCD performance monitors, PM3 for the model D and PM4 for the model E, both display time/distance rowed, calories burnt, power produced, stroke rate, and has a library of preset workouts. The performance monitor will log each work out and track progress; this information can be sent to your personal computer via an included PC-interface.

Both Concept 2 models D and E are 7' 11" long and 24" wide and will require floor space of 9' x 4' to cater for the users movements. Their dimensions when fully assembled are 25" x 33" x 54.5" for the model D and 27" x 47" x 54.5" for the model E. The Cocept model D weighs 57 pounds while its counterpart the model E weighs 65 pounds. The chains for model D and E are made of high grade steel and nickel-plated steel respectively. The maximum load weight on both models is 500 pounds.

The Cocept 2 model D can be bought with either the PM3 or the PM4 performance monitors. The PM3 is powered by 2 D batteries or by the inertia of the flywheel during rowing while the PM4 has a built in rechargeable battery pack that is re-charged during rowing exercises.  The Cocept 2 rowing machine model D with a PM3 monitor will costs $900 plus shipping; or with a PM4 it costs $1050. The Cocept 2 rowing machine model E, which comes standard with a PM4, costs $1260 plus shipping.
